You got a new one.

There is a difference between a Verizon store and a Verizon Agent…My daughters cell phone was finally at its end, I am surprised it lasted all this time…I guess she has been taking care it.  Since it was an Alltel phone, we were due an upgrade, what better time to take advantage of the discounts offered.

I figure regardless of the discounts I would end up spending 100 to 200 dollars because all the discounts don’t really come true until sometime later…so I saved up.  Hey 200 is a good chunk of cash now days to make, even if it only takes minutes to spend.

Were out shopping at our local mall here in Amarillo TX this past Friday, a Verizon dealer was there at the right time, they can help me I am ready for my upgrade.

After considering several phones, my daughter opted for  the Blackberry Storm 2, it was at the higher end of what I wanted to spend, but I figure we can share accessories since I had a Black Berry curve, hey at least if  lost my charger I had a backup.

I told the clerk, we want the Storm 2 and I don’t want the display phone.  He told me, no problem we got plenty on the back.  You know where this is going right…He started working right away…sly devil courteous and knowledgeable on the products I felt assured that I was getting a good deal.  After going thru some gyrations on my account, he was finally done.

We received our phone from the clerk and my daughter noticed it had scratches on the film that protects it…I told her its probably cardboard scratches where is bouncing inside the box.   Then she tells me, “He sold us the display.”  And sure enough we looked down.  And the display phone was gone from the showcase.

Immediately I told the clerk, “Hey you sold me the display phone.”

No I didn’t it’s a new one, I pulled from down here.  I left my display up here, oh where is my display phone, someone must of have taken it…exclaimed the clerk.

Oh man, the clerk was so busy help us, that his display phone was probably stolen.  He kept looking for it; he reassures us that he had giving us a new phone, and not the display.  We left confident that he had done us right.  Plus it was already closing time at the mall, we need to leave or watch a movie…those were the only options at the time.

My daughter was all excited about her new phone.  Started playing with it and trying different options, since I already owned a blackberry I figure I help her when she asked me and how to surf the internet.  I started explaining about the apps buttons, back button…and how she better not buy anything on it because I will be really upset if other charges show up the bill.

Well as I started to show her how to go online, I notice something.  Her “new” and “not the display phone” had the same surfing history for the internet.  And it’s not the basic yahoo or Google or blackberry site…oh no…It had a pretty unique site www.mitesoro.com which it’s a site I been working for ever to get started to help my wife sell hair bows.

How does a brand new phone right out the box has my site…I must thank Verizon for putting it there with the 16 GB memory, right.  It was the display phone.

I was not a happy camper.  I had specifically told the clerk I did not wish to have the display phone and in several occasions assured me that I was not receiving the display phone.  I did not have a reason to mistrust him.

Immediately I told my daughter to stop playing with the phone and to turn it off, I was going to have it exchange tomorrow morning.  It was already too late to back now, the mall was already closed.

I don’t wake up early on Saturdays, so it was not till around 11 that I made to the mall.  There was a different clerk there that morning.  I explained to him what had happen and he was very considerate.  He explained that they would probably be getting more in Tuesday and I could get one of those.  I felt much happier, but …oh yes there is always a butt.  He was going to check to see what was coming in.

He contacted the store owner and explained the situation. The store owner was not considerate to my situation.  He preached to me that his phones were just like cars and is new.  His phones carry the manufacturers warranty and good new phones.  And it was the only one he had at that store, because they cost him $600.00 and can’t afford to have extra phone hoping that they would sell.

And I did not contest that, I told him I understood it perfectly.   But I specifically requested a new phone and I did not want to have the display phone.

He continued explaining to me that the phone was new, that there was not a problem with it…and it had a problem later we had the 1 year manufacturer warranty we can claim. And I told him I knew that too. But your clerk did sell me the display phone, he lied to me.

He did not lie to you; he sold you a new phone, the store owner responded.

Yes, but it was the display phone that I did not wish to get it.

And I was told several times by your clerk that I was not getting the display phone, even though now his display phone is missing.  Or stolen as the clerk continues to claim.

We kept going back and forth on the car comparison and how I received a “new phone”.

I explained to him: “Are you telling me that the business practices employed by your clerk are correct. He misleads me to believe I was not receiving a display phone, after I had told your clerk that I did not want a display phone.”

So we agreed that he sold me the display phone because it was the only one there at the time.  We agreed that the phone was probably in working order and it still carry manufacturer warranty.  But we could not agree on the “I did not want a display phone.”

I told him, “If I fork out $200 bucks for a new phone, I want a new phone. I want the new phone smell.” Not the phone with 100 other people finger smells have poked at it.

Then we went back with car dealership comparison.  How you can test drive a vehicle and when you purchase it, you are buying a car that maybe other people have sat on or test drove.

Yes, it’s somewhat true.  But I responded. “ If your clerk would have been honest with me and told me that the was the only phone left, I would have had the choice to take it, wait till more phone came in, or simply gone to another store to purchase the phone.”

“I was not given the choice. I was lied to” all I wanted was a new out of the sealed box phone.  It’s that too much to ask for.

The store owner did more checking.  And he was not going to get another blackberry storm 2.  He offered a $25.00 discount, which is about 12.5% of the 200.00 or free car charger and rubber case, but that was not really enough to solve my problem.

It was final, “if I can not get a new phone, just return my money.  I will go somewhere else.”  The store owner agreed, but…oh yes…here is where it upsets me again.

All these time, I have been talking to the store owner on the phone.  He is at some other store and not physically present at the time.  So after agreeing to return my money.  He calls back.  He is going to charge me a restocking fee.  $35.00 He tells me that Verizon has told him that he must charge me a restocking fee because I am returning a new phone.

I told him, yes.  I was exhausted of this problem and wanted out the situation already.  I did not want to quarrel with them any longer.

“I am going to take it up with Verizon, just give me proof of the charge.” I responded.

I left with a $35.00 lesson in life.  It is ok to lie; it’s a new phone anyways.

Part 1 out how ever long it takes me to solve this problem.

Visit Your School

Highland Park ISD Bill Board

When was the last time you visited your kid’s school?  Let’s hope it was not during registration.  Perhaps, you had to pick up your kid from school when he was sick.  Or maybe you plan to visit you kids school this Friday when you pick him up early to go on that needed spring break vacation.

I don’t blame you.  Who would want to go back to school anyways?  We already spent enough time there during our youth, some of us more years than usual.  Why visit my kid’s school?

That question poped into my mind when I drove by the billboard at I-40 between Whitaker and Lakeside. It was a nice little reminder.  I apologize for the picture it was late when it was taken.  I might need to add that this is in Amarillo, Texas, just in case those streets don’t sound familiar.  But why would a school want to advertise, last time I check that only thing they sell is healthy snacks in the lobby.

The schools are always trying to get parent / teacher and parent / child involvement.  I guess the billboard is just another form; we don’t seem to pay attention to the papers our kids bring home from school. Oh, don’t say you were never asked to visit.  We all get the forms for participation in events, to meet your kid’s teacher, or schedule a conference.  But there are also events like football, basketball, festivals, social events and the list goes on.

What are we waiting for to get in touch with our child, but wait “I’m too busy?”

Yes.  That is it.  We are too busy with work or home chores.  Or perhaps you had other obstacles, my parents had language barrier when I was in school.  But I don’t have room to talk; I suffer from these issues too.  We stay to busy in our daily life and fail to pay attention to “little things”.  They are just little right?

“Lack of parental involvement is the biggest problem facing public schools.” Express a document about parent involvement.

“Parent involvement is crucial to the health and well-being of a child. As a parent, you are the most important influence in your child’s success in school and in life. In this role, you have a fresh opportunity every day to get involved with your child.” PTA.org

“The results of recent research are very clear: When parents are actively involved in their children’s education, they do better in school. The academic level of the parents, their socioeconomic level, and their ethnic or racial origin are not determining factors for academic success. It is essential for parents to have a positive attitude regarding education, and to demonstrate trust that their children can do well.”  from the Office of Educational Research and Improvement, U.S. Department of Education and is in the public domain.

Schools are encouraged to plan events and activities to promote involvement, including classroom visits, luncheons/dinners, student performances and national speakers. Highland Park School or which ever happens to be your school has a few of them through out the year.  Be part of your kid’s involvement.  You will be surprised how even a spending lunch with your kid helps out.

Let’s do something, plan a visit to your child school.  Highland Park, I will go visit you…

Student Council Fired!

After years of being the high counselor.  She got fired for not the doing her job, it is belived that the principal did not like her, and was only looking for an excuse to fire her.

It is a bad idea to fire her during this part of the year, since she had been working with student in getting them into college.  Now the middel school counselor in over her head doing both roles as middle school and high school.  She is swamp with work.

The high school counselor was well loved by all student, she was know as the second mom by alot of students.  With thursday being the day she got fired, and friday the day we all find out, we were all mourning the news.  Hopefully by monday, we will all be mellow over the weekend to be sober up about this.

Academic Home Invasion!

A few years ago a large part of the community was convinced that laptops in school will help kids learn! I’m not going to even try to do the math; I am just simply going to say that they do not! Laptops are a waste of investment in schools; Students are much better off writing by hand, and actually using actual library archival retrieves for academic purposes. For example, when we first got laptops in school, it was my freshman year. That year MySpace so a dramatic increase in populous, and everyone was playing World Of Warcraft.  Even worse is that students were taking photos of themselves! But this is about schools violating common ‘humane’ rules!

So it turns out that there is a case, and chances are that there is a whole plethora of similar cases. This case is about a boy who was punished in school for something he did at home. Say what!? Even worse is that the administration that was in charge of the boy’s penalty claim, revealed evidence with a photographical image; Image of the boy breaking some rule in his home. What the fuck!? I do believe my vulgarity is perfect for this type of what ever this is!

What is worse is the spectrum of things you can do with the technology today. The schools that have laptops watch it! The schools that have/do/ or with do this similar thing should have their whole staff abolished and reformed! With a sense of accomplishing live video feeds, schools can phish (fishing, beats me why they call it like that.) Phish passwords, uploaded photos, home network patrol; I like to call it night walking patrol. Home network patrol is like, the laptop acts as a double agent in a homes internet network; Thus stealing information from other home network appliances, if it has internet it’s a home network appliance!

Some high school students are yes eighteen, for those of you who like to use any excuse you can. Yes eighteen is legal for anything, including exploitation. Unless that person is in school, against there will, without their consent, etc. Stop using excuses, it makes you seem like you’re on their side!

But still, how many of us change into our white nights before or computer. Or how many of us, change into something more comfortable in “our” individually acclaimed house!  Which age groups are affected!? 6th grade and up! That’s really young folks, like 11-18.

Bottom line, invasion of privacy. And to keep you more alert is that you won’t know when you are being spied on.

Cold Squids!

Some of the lastest weather reports over the past blizzard, claim it to be an epic storm. This storm was comprised of three storms. First one being a ice storm, which was pushing from a warm front from the north, and a snow storm which was going to happen either way. Finally the most epic part of all, is the lightning storm. However since most of the snow white outs the sky and horizon; the lightning was not seen very well, and the sounds were too faint to hear.

Even worse then the snow/ice/lightning storm, is that out of all evil school districts in the panhandle, Highland Park took it’s sweet time deciding whether to or not to close school for that day. Which I’m surprised they took so long. Having woken up to two and a half feet of snow, 10 bellow, and even tow bros tow trucks were stuck in the snow. It was a very meak time during the cold week. Too be even more surprised students did not get a delayed start on monday morning. It seems that if the school makes money on attendance, then they will loose a lot of money get kids sick.

News reports of the west cost, is that there are a surprise surplus of giant squid. And these squids weighing from 30-60 pounds is quite a catch. Fishermen hunting these find a new sport, and many people from around the coast want to take a look at these squids, all this according to Mike Krumboltz. The more interesting topic is, what is causing these giant squids to appear and grow!? Is it global warming? Is it the polar tilt? Is it a once in a thousand year migration? They should, for the love of mother earth, leave the squids alone. If anything they are on a food migration from the depths not being able to find food they surface to warmer waters in search of food and maybe continue their species on.

After Schooling.

After Schooling is now fun and educational; Schools are starting extened school days accross the district. This new activity for young students benefits the communities. Where else would you like your kids to be after school, aside from school and having good clean educational fun. The expected rates for students doing this in the future is estimated to climb. Amarillo College and WT A&M Students help in providing assistance at the after school programs, making a difference in our community. It really helps teaching students other subjects aside from something out of a text book. The students learn life skills, but still help them better understand what they learn in class with “excellent hands-on learning activities.”

Low Grade Limits! Is Highland Park Affected?

A new Texas law, is on the students side for easy passing? Schools can no longer give lower grades then the limit. This allows for students to recover from their mistakes and make it easier from them to pass. According to Amarillo News, “It’s easier for a student to work toward a passing grade if a 50 is the lowest grade they can receive. It’s much harder for a student to work back from a zero.”  They say it is to make it harder for students to give up on their grades.

Highland Park might be affected by this new law. So far Hereford, Canyon, and Amarillo ISD have adopted this new rule in class. Statistics show that the students are now trying “less” to strive for their grades. This reduces the number of drop students significantly but raises a number of questions along with it!

TVs in the Cafeteria?

So we got a flat screen tv in our cafeteria, would anyone want to explain why our money is going into that? Is it even our money?  They want us to watch the news in the cafeteria? What are we going to have announcements through the tvs, like they do in those big school. Or if you recall the movie, JOHN TUCKER Must Die, there was tvs all over, and thats how they got their daily announcements?  Other than that, why else do we have them?  We should have Rock Band hooked up to it, so we can have some kind of entertainment during the day=] Yeay!  Please Reply and tell us about the flat screens!
